28th March
We've have a had a number of clients in the past year who have asked us to fit radio communications facilities to their boats. The kind of radio system you decide to use on boats will depend largely on what you need it for and where you'll be using your boat.

The obvious choice for boating enthusiasts who require reliable communications they can use on a regular basis is a VHF radio which operates on dedicated marine ban frequencies. You can now get portable models that can reliably transmit over a five mile range, using five watts of power.

One of the VHF marine band radios we recommend is the Icom IC-M401. This is a basic, easy to use marine VHF radio and an ideal transceiver when space is at a premium in small boats like RIBs and where water ingress on communication equipment has been a traditional problem.

The Icom IC-M401 has a flush mount body and compact front panel that make it ideal for installation in a steering panel or bulkhead. FRS-GMRS two-ways are reliable to a distance of about three miles, but for commercial use The IC-M87 can be used for both marine and basic PBR applications. This radio will require a licence but it is easy to use with a simple push of a button changing the operating band between marine and PBR channels.
