21st March
The Japan nuclear disaster remains a great cause for concern in Asia, but a lesser known incident which occurred this month raised a few eyebrows in the US.

The importance of providing your employees with the right advice concerning the use of 2-way radios was never more apparent when a potential nuclear incident occurred near Toledo earlier this month. Of course walkie talkies are harmless in themselves and more associated with life-saving but it is useful to have knowledge as to how they can best be put to use and perhaps in rare cases where they shouldn't be used.

The Davis-Besse nuclear power plant close to the city went "radio-inactive" after losing its emergency water cooling system for two minutes. Ok this isn’t in the same league as losing your nuclear cooling facility altogether as we have seen in Japan but it did cause some concern for those working at the plant.
And the reason? Apparently it was an incorrectly used walkie talkie which caused the problem, or at least a walkie talkie used in the wrong kind of setting.

A technician at the nuclear plant decided to use his walkie talkie in a room which unfortunately for him contained a the back-up panel for a system designed to automatically pump water into the reactor should the cooling system fail. Radio waves from the 2-way radio were said to have disrupted the signal from the control panel to special pumps and emergency valves.

It has to be said that the technician ignored signs that clearly stated 2-way radios shouldn’t be used in the area. This kind of incident was commonplace in the early 80s until the Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued a warning bulletin in December 1983.

Of course this turned out to be a minor incident in the big scheme of things, walkie talkies are infinitely more likely to help save lives than put lives at risk. Just make sure you invest in the best quality 2-way radios we have a range of walkie talkies available to suit all your needs.
